DETERMINING FACE SHAPES AND FEATURES

The first step to proper makeup application is to determine your face shape.  Your makeup cannot be applied correctly without this important step.

Once you have identified your face shape, you will be able to correctly apply blush, choose the best hairstyle, glasses, etc.  We must remember that we are not bilaterally perfect, which simply means that both sides of our face are different.

Here are the six basic face shapes:

The Oval Face

The oval facial type is generally accepted as the perfect face.  The contour and proportions of the oval face form the basis for modifying all other facial types.

The Diamond Face

This face has a narrow forehead.  The greatest width is across the cheek bones.

 

The Round Face

The round face is usually broader in proportion to its length than the oval face.  It has a rounding chin and hairline.

The Square Face

The square face is composed of comparatively straight lines with a wide forehead and square jaw line.

 

The Heart-Shaped Face

The heart-shaped face has a wide forehead and narrow, pointed chin.

The Oblong Face

This face has greater length in proportion to its width than the square or the round face.  It is long and narrow.

Important! Combination Face Shapes:

It is not uncommon to look at a face and be unable to determine the exact face shape.  The features within the shape of the face make a difference.  The eyes may be close set, the nose short and wide, and the lips thin or thick; or the features may be the opposite.

Once you know how to use corrective makeup to enhance the various features, each part of the face can be given the attention it needs.
